Basta opened its doors for business in January of 2010, the prominent wood fire oven offering a warm and welcoming neighborhood meeting place. Media praise and loyal patronage soon followed. Locals and travelers flocked to the hearth for a taste of bubbly pizza perfection, chef inspired plates, and the discovery of a restaurant to call home. The power of the 1000-degree oven that inspired Chef Kelly lit up the palate of every lucky eater to stumble upon the culinary gem. That fiery artisan spirit was reflected in every bite and beverage the Basta crew served up.
Kelly Whitaker returned to Colorado in 2008 with a dream, his own restaurant and a hospitality group made up of serious talent. Serious talent was to unleash first by Kelly and the wood-fired craft he learned in Italy and perfected in Michelin star LA and Hollywood restaurants. His wife, Erika, left her corporate job in the fashion industry and focused her diverse abilities on the restaurant world to help make their dream a reality. When the couple met Alan Henkin as they were shopping for an author for their wine list they knew immediately that their search was over. As a level 2 master sommelier, Alan had been happily utilizing his talents at top Colorado restaurant, Frasca Food and Wine as assistant sommelier under Bobby Stuckey, M.S. It was a match made in artisan food and beverage heaven and Basta was born.
Basta means "enough" in Italian which reflects the restaurant's passion for creating magnificent flavors from simple, local, seasonal foods. Alan, Erika and Kelly feel that using local and organically grown ingredients as much as possible is essential to the integrity of their food and their business.
